Quilts
Quilt is the bed cover with the largest variety of style and quality.
Most quilt are made of 100% cotton fabric. Thus makes it very comfortable for sleeping.
A quilt usually has three layers, quilt top, backing and batting( fiber filling):
- Quilt top: it usually made of one many pieces of fabrics sewn together into an intricate design.
A whole cloth quilt has the top made of a whole piece of fabric. This kind of quilt is usually display a beautiful quilting (a stitching process of attaching the 3 layers of fabric together).
A pieced top is made of at least 2 different fabrics. Fabric is cut into pieces of different shapes and pt together for an intricate design. A quilter spend the most time on the quilt top to produce a high quality and attractive quilt.
- Batting: is a thin layer of fiber that goes between the top and backing to provide warmth to the quilt. Thin summer quilts are often have a very thin layer of 100% cotton batting or the batting just simply flannel fabric.
Warmer quilts will have thick 100% cotton batting, polyester batting or wool batting. Polyester batting provide much warmth and can be very hot since polyester does not breathes, in other words, it traps body heat under the quilt and does not absorb moisture.
Wool batting is the finest choice. It's very warm but it dose regulate body temperate. You will feel absolutely warm and yet comfortable under a quilt with wool batting. Wool also retains its softness and loft the best, thus helps keeping the quilt look fresh and new always. However, it's really hard to come across quilts with wool batting unless you custom-order them.
- backing: is the back of the quilt, usually made from muslin (old style) or fabric that is co-ordinate with the quilt top.
A top of the line queen size quilt can cost of $5,000 and the mock-up made in china one can be $50.
of course, just like other bedding covers, this vast difference in prices is a result of fabric quality and craftmanship quality.
If you are real lucky, a fine quilter that you know (or hire) will custom-make one for you (either as a gift-then you are really, really lucky- or for money). Either way, a custom made quilt is as unique piece of art.
Qulit designs comes in a undefinite array of style. In fact, when you think nothing new can be created, one (or two or many more) comes.
The most polular quilt righ now is Rag quilt. These quilts are THE most ultimate in comfort. The seams that join the pieces together are large shown on top and clipped at every half an inch and then laundered to create chenille quality. This process make the quilt chenille soft. Nothing can be more comfortable than wrapping yourself with a rag quilt in a cold evening.
