Review of bedding material
A bedspread normally has three layers: top with attractive design, backing with co-ordinating fabric and filling or batting. mabufacturers also group top and bottom as "shell" and the middle layer as filing.
There is no doubt that the most comfortable bedspread, comforter, quilt or coverlet is the one that breathe, which means it obsorbs your body moisture and allow excess heat to excape.
The best for this purpose is natural fiber such as wool, silk, cotton and linen.
Cotton fiber is extremely comfortable to sleep under. Since cotton breathes well and regualte the amount of heat, it's excellent for baby quilts. 100% cotton bedding is not as warm as as polyester or wool, but for many of us, polyester or thick wool are just too hot. And It also drapes well around your body.
Cotton fabric and filling also ages well. When the bedding gets old, it has a more graceful, well-used look and specially softer and even more comfortable.
The only drawback is that high quality cotton fabric with lustrous sheen and tightly woven thread (600 thread count or more) that makes attractive bedding can cost as three times as the synthetic fiber counterpart.
Silk is an ultiamte choice for style and quality. There is no controversy about silk's bedding performance nor look, but be prepare to spend a fortune if you want that finest look. An top quality silk bedding can command up to $2000 in price.
Synthetic material (polyester or other similar materials) often has very intricate, breathtaking design and most of the time is much less expensive than natural material. However, if you truly enjoys the most comfortable bedding but do not want to spend a fortune on a designers' bed set, you might want to consider haveing 2 seperate sets of pillows and covers. One is for daytime display and one for night time 'real' usage.
Linen is an excellent choice for summer light weight bedding. Nothing breathes better than linen in the summer. You have the right coverage but not the heat. Linen bedding is also elegant. A popular choice is linen/rayon blend or linen/cotton blend. It gives more a relax look and lower the price tag significantly.
Another factor you need to consider when purchasing bedding is how to care for it. If you have a maid that come in cleaning your house, change your beddings and take the big heavy comforter and pillow shams to a dry cleaner, ofcourse high end fancy beding is suitable.
But if you are like me who has some kids and hold a regular job, you probably just want to pull the bed sheets and pillow cases, quilt and comforter out and put right into the wash machine. Then , 100% cotton or cotton blend beddings are better choice.
